In 2022, Wanda L. James was elected to represent Colorado’s First Congressional District on the University of Colorado Board of Regents, becoming the first Black woman elected to the board in more than four decades.

A first-generation CU Boulder graduate and the first Black woman commissioned through the university’s Naval ROTC program, Wanda returned to CU with a deeply personal understanding of what access to higher education can make possible.

As a Regent, Wanda helps govern a four campus university system serving students across Colorado. Her work focuses on student opportunity and success, affordability, academic excellence, responsible governance, executive leadership, and ensuring that the University of Colorado remains responsive to the people it serves.

She brings the perspective of a graduate, veteran, business leader, entrepreneur, and elected official to every decision, with students at the center of the work.

Wanda believes the responsibility of a Regent begins with the students who entrust their education and future to the University of Colorado.

Her approach to governance is grounded in listening, asking difficult questions, challenging assumptions, and ensuring that decisions made at the highest levels ultimately strengthen the student experience.

For Wanda, serving as a Regent is about more than holding a seat. It is about using that seat with purpose.
